Microsoft L2TP/IPSec VPN Client Overview
Description: Microsoft L2TP/IPSec VPN Client is downloadable, distributable software currently in beta testing, which allows users to make Layer Two Tunneling Protocol with Internet Protocol security (L2TP/IPSec) connections from computers running the following operating systems:

IPSec NAT Traversal Overview
Description: Historically, one of the issues with deploying Layer Two Tunneling Protocol with Internet Protocol security (L2TP/IPSec) is that IPSec peers cannot be located behind a Network Address Translator (NAT). Internet service providers and small office/home office (SOHO) networks commonly use NATs to share a single public IP address. Although NATs help conserve the remaining IP address space, they also introduce problems for end-to-end protocols such as IPSec.

PPTP Traffic Analysis
Description: The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a widely used virtual private networking protocol, included in Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. PPTP is a tunneling mechanism to transfer Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames across an intermediate network. By leveraging the authentication, encryption, and protocol configuration mechanisms of PPP, PPTP connection provides a way to create secure connections across public networks, such as the Internet, for both remote access and router-to-router virtual private network (VPN) connections. PPTP is described in RFC 2637.

Network Access Quarantine Control
Description: Because typical remote access connections only validate the credentials of the remote access user, the computer used to connect to a private network can often access network resources even when its configuration does not comply with organization network policy. For example, a remote access user with valid credentials could connect to a network with a computer that does not have required anti-virus software installed on it. Or, a client computer with routing enabled might pose a security risk, providing an opportunity for a malicious user to access corporate network resources through the client computer, which has an authenticated connection to the private network. Despite the efforts made within organizations to ensure that computers used internally comply with network policy, those used from employee’s homes for remote access can still present significant risk to the network.

IP Address Assignment and the Routing and Remote Access Service
Description: Remote access clients, when using either a dial-up or virtual private network (VPN) connection, are assigned an IP address through the Internet Protocol Control Protocol (IPCP) IP Address option (RFC 1332) during the negotiation of the Point-to-Point (PPP) connection. The remote access server obtains the IP addresses that are assigned to remote access clients from either a DHCP server or a static pool of IP addresses configured locally.

Split Tunneling for Concurrent Access to the Internet and an Intranet
Description: When a Windows-based VPN client makes a VPN connection, it automatically adds a new default route for the VPN connection and modifies the existing default route that points to the Internet to have a higher metric. Adding the new default route means that Internet locations except the IP address of the VPN server are not reachable for the duration of the VPN connection.
