Web Hosting

Overview:

Web hosting is a service that allows users to post Web pages to the Internet. A Web host, or hosting service provider (HSP), is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for Web sites to be viewed on the Web.

Web hosting is a primary service that consumers can utilize after obtaining either dial-up or broadband access to the Internet. It allows users to disseminate their own information resources to any Internet user that is interested in accessing them. Web hosting utilizes the server/client model to distribute content. A Web hosting provider will offer its clients access to a Web server that will push that client's content to recipients on request. Recipients use clients, or Web browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to request content from the Web over their own Internet connection.

Definitions of Web Hosting on the Web:

  • A service that allows you to upload and store a site's HTML documents and related files on a Web server. This makes the files available on the World Wide Web for viewing by the public. Also called site hosting.
  • Placing a consumer's or organization's Web page of Web site on a server that can be accessed via the Internet.
  • The files for a customer's website are kept on an Internet Channel server. The customer can use FTP to maintain the site. Internet Channel offers two types of Web Hosting; Basic Web Service, and Custom Web Service.
  • Web hosting allows your Web site to be connected to the Internet at high speed via a Web server so its information can be viewed globally through a browser. Metaphorically speaking, renting space on a server is comparable to renting an apartment. For a monthly fee, you reside in that apartment and all maintenance is the responsibility of the property. You also have access to certain amenities that would otherwise be a costly investment. A Web hosting company houses your Web site on its own secure servers, enabling you to affordably leverage the power of a high-speed network, 24/7 expert monitoring and support, and state-of-the-art technology.
  • A service provided by the server where your Web pages are stored.
  • A service provided by an ISP that allows for your web page to viewed on the Internet by uploading it to a dedicated computer.
  • The storage of data on a server for later access. In e-business, refers to a service provided by a third party that hosts and maintains a company’s Web site.
  • A service that is offered to piggy back a website construction, for those who would like to have a presence on the World Wide Web and do not have their own domain set-up on the Internet. It may display information about their company or organization in the form of Web pages. One does not need a computer or Internet access to be hosted.
  • A service provider which houses the actual pages of a website on a computer and provides website visitors access to the site's pages.
  • A service in which a vendor offers the housing of business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce Web sites via vendor-owned shared or dedicated servers and applications for enterprises at the provider-controlled facilities. The vendor is responsible for all day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Web site. The customer is responsible for the content.
  • A service that provides a physical location for a Web site. Customers’ sites reside on computers stored in secure and climate-controlled environments and permanently linked to the Internet through high-speed data lines. These computers store the Web pages that make up Web sites. As soon as your pages are installed on the server they become available to visitors and customers on the Internet - providing they have the correct address. (www.yourcompanywebsite.com)
  • Basically hosting is space on a server for a website to reside so people can access it over the Internet.
  • Companies that provide, for a fee, the equipment and other technical resources needed for individuals or a companies to place their web site, or other services, on the internet. In many cases ISP’s also provide web hosting services as part of a package when providing internet access to their clients. Many firms specialize solely in providing web hosting solutions.
  • The provision of computer facilities for the storage and delivery of an Internet site, note, this does not include provision telephone or other means of connecting to the Internet. Compare to Internet Service Provider
  • One service often closely associated with domain names is web site hosting. The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites, all hosted on computers (called web servers) all over the world. Because of the web's uniquely global nature, a web site should be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Rather than pay to have a 24/7 dedicated Internet connection to an in-house webserver, many people opt to host their sites with a web hosting provider. Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared (or dedicated) webserver, which the ISP maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet.
  • A web server holds all your web pages. It's also where all processing of CGI scripts occurs. Although any computer can potentially be a web server, it's wiser to hire server space on a dedicated web server not least because it's quicker. A full web hosting service (i.e. on a virtual server) is available at very competitive rates.
  • A Web hosting company is a company that specializes in hosting Web sites for other companies on their computers. Typically an ISP also offers Web-hosting services.
  • Some domain name registrars provide one or more web pages that can be customized to some extent. As used in our listings, this is not the same thing as regular web hosting, which usually allows full control over the content of a page or pages.
  • A service that provides an entry point to the Internet for a business Web site provided by an Internet Access Provider.
  • The placement of the Web site on a certain server and providing the necessary infrastructure for its operation.
  • A service that provides an entry point to the Internet for a business Web site.
  • The service that hosts and delivers web site content to browsers.
  • A service that provides an area on the Internet to store one or more websites.

Supported Platforms:

The two most supported platforms on web hosting are Unix/ Linux and Windows. You can also host your web sites on FreeBDS or MacOS X.
